3. Content. For the Summary section, and under each job description, there are two basic rules for content. One is to make sure the information is relevant. One of the biggest mistakes I see is spending too much time describing the company, and not enough time describing what the employee did. Unless the client is the Founder or President of the company, any more than one line spent describing it is too much.
- Do not use different types of fonts and add some pictures to make your CV more attractive. You should only use font Times New Roman for your resume objective and do not add any pictures to make it looks more professional and show your respect to the readers.
What is missing? Are you an individual contributor who needs experience managing and leading a diverse group of people? How could you get that? Are your tech skills stellar or good enough? How and where could you enhance them? Is social media impacting how your profession operates and youre basically a casual Facebook and LinkedIn participant? What could you do? Do you need another degree, certification, or license? Are you an active member of influential thought-leading groups either in-person or online? Whom do you know and, more importantly, who should know you within your organization and field? Who would you like to use as a reference but do not have the intimate relationships you need to ask? These are the questions you need to ask yourself to identify the holes in your career strategy. Given the timeframe, you have the opportunity to tick them off your list methodically.
The confusion comes with the fact that, as a general rule, the subject is understood in a resume, but the pronouns are not included. So, for example, when speaking about a current job, instead of saying, I oversee all office operations, I control a $100,000 inventory, and I balance the books for four major accounts, a resume usually reads, Oversee all office operations, control a $100,000 inventory, and balance the books for four major accounts. In resume-ese, the I is understood, but not stated, in order to give the document a more objective and professional tone.
