11. Wrong tone: Writing as if you would be doing an organisation a great favour by going to work for them, will win you no friends. Of course you want to show what you would bring to an organisation, but you must not write as if you would do that as a stop gap before you move on to something bigger and better.
Its shocking to me that the majority of job hunters are still using an objective. First, let me say STOP THAT! Next, let me tell you why: An objective is all about what you want. Truthfully, hiring managers couldnt care less. Your objective statement means absolutely NOTHING to them. It does not make you stand out, it does not position you as a leader, and frankly, instead of getting you somewhere, firmly plants you three steps back. However, a personal branding statement, followed by a career summary that is strategically formulated around your unique promise of value, is the golden ticket. If that was Greek to youand you have no idea what Im talking abouthold on, its about to get better.
You may have scoured the net by typing in relevant keywords or phrases that are related to your particular job experience. It is not uncommon to find a work experience related online form that prompts you to complete the required information on a job board site. But is this enough to land you the perfect job?
However, even if youre not quite looking to move on, you never know when/if youll want to leave or under unfortunate circumstances have to leave. Its for this reason that its good to update your resume, not after you leave your employer, but while youre there and everythings fresh.
