Educate yourself on the market place; the more informed you are the better you will be able to evaluate opportunities and make an appropriate decision.
In todays job market you have to show the reader why you are different than the thousand other job hunters going after the same position. The first third of your resume is your three million-dollar billboard and best sales pitch. Show the employer why you are in the top tier of your industryand that you are innovative, forward-focused, and high caliber.
The first answer to that problem is not to list them as such but to incorporate them into an interesting but brief paragraph, using selling words similar to those you should have introduced in the earlier stages of your resume. As an example, rather than saying 'I like playing football, running and going to the gym' you could instead write, 'I strive to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, taking part in both individual and team sports at an amateur level'. There would then be an opportunity to go on to explain how being a team player on the football pitch allows for you to take the same team spirit into your job. In this way you have not only addressed your hobbies but found a way to make them relevant to the job you are applying for.
When I graduated from University, in the height of the recession, I learned this cruel reality firsthand as I went through several rounds of interviews with great companies that I felt would be an amazing fit for myself. At the end of the 2-3 week interview process I heard the same feedback from the Hiring Manager and Human Resource coordinators,
