You have your own baggage, your own obstacles to overcome and you need a strategy that is best for you. Start by writing the resume you want to send, with the words you want to use, and give that resume a test run. You have nothing to lose since your existing resume isnt generating the leads you hoped for. A fresh approach is necessary, and job searching on your own terms seems like a good place to start as any.
Adding insult to injury, some writers prepare resumes in both the first and third person, as in the example that came across my desk that began with the objective: Position which will utilize my experience and provide opportunity for advancement and growth, clearly in the first person, given the use of the pronoun my. The resume continued with a summary of experience that read: Performs accounts payable activities . . . Reviews and classifies invoices . . . Interacts with vendors, with verb after verb written in the third person.
1. Being less than a straight shooter. I am more than a little surprised by the number of clients I work with who want to include exaggeration or lies in their resume strategy. Their reasoning is that everyone lies on their resume -- that is how you get ahead. Don't believe it! There is no surer way to put limits on a career than building it on something less than the truth. By lying, you may experience some short term success, but the higher up you, go the more vulnerable you will be to exposure. Companies can tolerate some dings, nicks, and shortcomings in your past far more than they can tolerate being deceived or lied to. The higher up you go, the more thoroughly you will be investigated. Also, at the higher levels, you will run into remarkably skilled interviewers who know how to ferret out half-truths, lies and deceit.
Always highlight your educational qualifications and any relevant experience that you have. If you do not have any experience that would help you in getting the job, then highlight interests or achievements that are related to the field.
